"looks so bad" "makes America SEEM"
There is a huge difference between The Image of the man created by media and political campaigns vs The Reality of how the man governs. And most of the time when people say "seems" it means "I feel like." ;-)

Optics matter
Yeah, and lies matter. The lies that Trump spews matter to the people dumb enough to believe them.
But don't call it "optics." That's a euphemism. Call it what it is: lies and bullshit for people dumb enough to blindly believe what their televisions and curated news feeds want them to believe. That's what political campaigns are - emotionally manipulative garbage to emotionally manipulate the ignorant.
But yes, of course lies matter.
I was speaking of the optics of Biden’s debate performance.
I'm not saying it doesn't matter. I'm saying it doesn't matter at all as much as people are saying it does.
They do. But do you know what matters more? US weapons and US soft power. The US military being really large. The government is a lot more than the president. If the policies are right then it doesn't matter too much about who is the president.
It might be embarrassing for Americans but that's about it. Policy is the important thing.
