Yesterday, filmmaker Jeremy Boreing again released a compelling, consequential interview with is well worth your time to view in full. I did last night, and thought a particular section offered some alarming suggestions about why today’s American Right has come to embrace blood libel-level genocidal antisemitism.
I’ve cued the embedded video above to the part excerpted below.
Jeremy, an Evangelical Christian, interviewed longtime conservative writer Rod Dreher, an Orthodox Christian. Midway through the discussion, Rod offered his compelling views on his former friend Tucker Carlson’s supernatural claims:
Rod Dreher: “And about the Tucker thing, you know, when Tucker came out and told the world that he had been attacked by a demons, people laughed at him. I didn’t.”
Jeremy Boreing: “I didn’t either.”
Rod: “He had told me about it right after it happened. And this was like a year or so before he told the world. He texted me because he knew I was a serious Christian being Orthodox. I do have a demonology.”
Jeremy: “Yeah.”
Rod: “And I said, 'Wow, that if this is this really happened to you, you need to talk to an exorcist.’ And I connected him with an exorcist I know. And the exorcist also brought in a second exorcist to work with him.”
“But Tucker decided he didn't want to do that. He said, ‘I'm too Protestant for that. This seems like witchcraft to me.’ That's his actual word. I went back, I still had the text saved. I went back to read them recently. Tucker said, ‘Exorcism seems like witchcraft.’ I'm like, ‘Wait, you think you were attacked by a demon, but a Catholic or an Orthodox exorcist coming is witchcraft?’"
“Anyway, so he refused that sort of help. He told me he he’d be fine, just him and the Bible. I even offered to get a Protestant deliverance pastor for him. That wasn't good enough for him.”
“Well, he gets fired from Fox a couple of months later in the Dominion settlement. And then that fall he launches his own network and goes really dark really fast with that Darryl Cooper who says Churchill is a real villain of World War II.”
“And you've seen as well as I have, it got darker and darker and darker. And then he gets [Neo-Nazi Nick] Fuentes on and that's when I finally felt like I had to speak out and say something. I just said this was a big mistake. Something I wrote and ‘you shouldn't do this. We ought to keep the firewall there.’ And Tucker texted me ending our friendship. That's that.”
“Well, but I’ve thought about that demonic attack, which I believe was real since then. In November, after all, after he had broke with me and all that, I was sitting in Budapest on my couch trying to put off going to bed. I looked at YouTube. The algorithm served up a clip from a recent Tucker broadcast in which Tucker sitting in his main studio talking with a guy who looks like a hunter, a local hunter.”
“And Tucker starts off talking about the things that are the spooky things in the woods behind his house in Maine. And he goes on to say that ‘when I go back there hunting, I feel evil spirits in a certain part of the place.’ He said, ‘Local people have told me, yeah, don't go back there. It's bad news.’ Tucker says on the clip, you can find it on YouTube. He says, ‘I even found a 1929 Field and Stream magazine article talking about the spooky haunted woods,’ but said Tucker, ‘the hunting is great back there, so I'd go.’”
“I immediately thought of a film I had seen called ‘The Witch,’ 2015 film by the director Robert Eggers. I don't like horror movies, but Eggers is a really great director, and I wanted to see this movie. It was his first big hit.”
“It's set in New England in the 1630s. It opens with a proud man going before the Puritans who run his town, and they're telling him, the town council or whatever, the board of elders says, ‘You have to repent of this heresy.’ He won't repent. So, he and his family get exiled to the edge of a forest. In the film, inside the forest lives a witch with demonic powers. And over the course of the movie, that physical proximity to spiritual evil that is located in a place works on the pride of the protagonist to destroy him and his family.”
“I have a theory that something like that might be might have happened to Tucker. It might be happening to Tucker. I hope I'm wrong about that. But I do believe absolutely in spiritual warfare and the exorcists I've talked to who know about his case are incredibly worried about him. They say he's in deep deep danger and he also has the ear of the vice president of the United States.”
The video above is the one Rod referenced. Here are some key excerpts from Tucker’s discussion with Michael Waddell, an outdoorsman podcaster, for your consideration:
Tucker Carlson: “There’s some spiritual stuff going on around here.”
Michael Waddell: “Yeah, I Agree.”
Tucker: “And people have written about it for hundreds of years, particularly this part of Maine. And there are sections, there's a section, I mean not even a mile from right where we're sitting here, that I grouse hunt in. There's a logging road through it. And it's one of the most beautiful stretches you've ever seen of river and it's insane actually.”
Michael: “Wow.”
Tucker: “The river has cut these incredible pools and waterfalls through the woods and there’s not one person there. I’ve never in my lifetime seen a person there. I’m not even sure who owns it. I’ve asked many times. I’ve never gotten an answer to who owns this land. And it’s big. I mean, this river is miles long. Not one person. And every time I hunt there, I get whoa, these weird feelings like I want to get the hell out of here, but I know that there are grouse in here. And this is so beautiful.”
“But like I, anyway, bottom line is that stretch of river has been considered haunted, really haunted. Yes, I've actually done a deep dive on it over the last 10 years where something I found, a piece in Field and Stream from 1929 like a 100 years ago by a guy who spent the night on that stretch of river and said that he was the only person he knew who would do it because it was widely regarded as dangerous, spiritually dangerous, that none of the Passamaquoddy Indians would ever do that.”
[I searched the 1928-1930 Field and Stream archives manually with many keywords based on Tucker’s description and found no such article. Perhaps Tucker meant a different year or a different magazine… as if it would have really mattered.]
Tucker: “And I don't really know what any of this means because there's, so I don't really understand anything. But I just know having spent a lot of time in the woods here, there's some very heavy stuff going on. We have no poisonous snakes. You’re not going to get killed by a black bear. They’re not aggressive. There really are no threats in the woods here, right? But there’s a massive threat in the woods here.”
Michael: “But it’s a feeling. I totally understand it. And it's not like off ‘Deliverance.’ You're not worried about a banjo.”
Tucker: “No, no, it's nothing like that… I don’t know what is going on. but any honest person who spent time in the Maine woods at night will tell you there’s something up there.”
Michael: “I can believe that.”
Tucker: “I’m not afraid of all of the woods at all. Of course, I mean, I choose to be in them every day, but there’s something going on. And there are tons of accounts of it. From the early white settlers here, from the Passamaquoddy, the native, you know, Native American tribe. And it’s just interesting. And only in the woods. I’ve never felt that way in like downtown DC.”
Michael: “I agree… Some people might think that maybe we’ve been smoking the Black Africa and just kind of going into our hippie trip, but no, it’s not. It’s nothing to do with the rubies and the gemstones. We don’t wear those necklaces. It is a deep connection that you can’t explain. And I'm telling you, I felt it in the woods.”
Tucker: “And I've of course felt God very often.”
Michael: “I do too.”
Tucker: “That's why I love the woods… I guess in general, I feel like the, the separation, the veil, the membrane between this world and and the spiritual world is thinner in the woods.”
Michael: “I agree.”
Tucker: “You walk into a clearing, the sun’s coming down through the trees and you’re like, ‘Ah, God created this. Thank you, God.’ And then there are other moments where you just feel deep, like terrifying menace….”
“And man, I was midway down this path on my property that we’ve had for many years. I know every inch of it. And all of a sudden, I had this feeling like, oh my gosh, like I it was pure terror. It came out of nowhere on land on a path I cut. So it’s not like I’m in some random piece of wood.”
“Do you know what I mean? Like I know exactly where I was, my cabin, right? … And it's not even dark. And I'm like, I felt like I was going to freak out. I had to get a hold of myself. Like, ‘don't be a little girl. Like, settle down.’ What is that?”
Michael: “When it comes to the Bible, I’m always, I know a lot of scripture. I can’t even repeat the book sometimes, but like ‘be still, know there’s God.’”
Tucker: “Yes.”
Michael: “That happens every single time.”
Tucker: “I agree.”
Michael: “And it also reminds me of the scripture of, you know it’s not flesh and blood that we we fight against, it’s the workers of the evil rulers and powers of those dark spirits, I forget.”
Tucker: “It’s Ephesians. There’s a 4570 lever rifle over that sink right there hanging on the wall and it has that Ephesians quote engraved on the side of it.”
Michael: “That scripture comes alive, are you kidding me?”
Tucker: “Someone gave it to me. Darryl Cooper, who's a good friend of mine, who's a historian podcaster, sent that, sent that rifle to me… I love that verse and so does he because it’s true.”
Michael: “It is true.”
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” — Ephesians 6:11-13
The specific region which Tucker discusses in the clip is Bryant Pond in Woodstock, Maine, a town with a population of fewer than 1,400 people where he owns a home and has vacationed for 40 years:
The town is located in Oxford County on the Westernmost side of the state and Tucker calls it his “favorite place in the world.”
Tucker has even said he has purchased plots in the Lakeside Cemetery.
Is there really “some spiritual stuff going on” around Tucker’s summer retreat home?
Is he right that “people have written about it for hundreds of years, particularly this part of Maine” or is that just another Tucker fabrication?
Just as one can check Field and Stream to see if the article he claims to have read actually exists, one can also start digging into the historical record and regional folklore.
Is there anything unusual here? Are those specific woods known to be haunted?
No.
I am so deeply disappointed. I was really hoping to find at least something that could suggest that maybe Tucker was feeling something meaningful about where he lives.
I cannot find any evidence that there is an established history of this geographic region as being in any way more unusually spiritual than any other. I’m not finding documented stories of hauntings, witches, ghosts, demons, or indigenous legends. (If anyone knows something I’ve missed then please note it in the comments and I’ll revise.)
The people who make content specifically about Maine and supposedly haunted places in the state show no interest in the region where Tucker lives:
You’d think if “people have written about it for hundreds of years” then that information would be easy to find online. You’d think that people who make the spooky historical YouTube videos would have been eager to popularize it.
There’s nothing special about Tucker’s woods in his “favorite place in the world.”
However, the phenomenon that he’s describing is real, documented, and entirely significant.
I agree with Rod and Jeremy that at least some of Tucker’s spiritual experiences may be genuine. He’s a liar, but that doesn’t mean he’s always lying.
Humans panicking in the woods goes way, way back, and the experience has now become foundational in our civilization and in our collective archetypes.
“And every time I hunt there, I get whoa, these weird feelings like I want to get the hell out of here, but I know that there are grouse in here. And this is so beautiful.”
“I guess in general, I feel like the the separation, the veil, the membrane between this world and and the spiritual world is thinner in the woods.”

As the etymology video above explains simply and the one below more colorfully, the “Pan” in the word “Panic” refers to the Greek god Pan who was known for terrifying travellers venturing through the woods. He was — is — a forest spirit.
When Tucker is in his woods and all of a sudden starts to feel “panic,” it is because he is feeling the attack of an entity which long ago humans called “pan.” This god Pan would literally scare people in the woods — the exact phenomenon that Tucker found so unsettling he needed to make a video to describe.
And it’s not like this spirit which the Greeks called Pan is limited to woods in Greece or woods around Tucker’s house or that “Pan” is his only name. This so-called “spirit” or “god” or “entity” or whichever label you prefer, will cause what we now call “Panic” and it can be found in forests everywhere.
And, of course, Pan looks like the stereotypical devil in our culture becaue he is the devil. I mean it literally, the Devil image in the Rider-Waite Tarot card is based on him:
In our popular imagination, from when we are children, we learn to think of the devil and his demons as horn-headed creatures who induce panic.
In Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot deck, the 20th century’s greatest occultist explained explicitly the devil card’s link both to Pan and also to antisemitism — specifically the blood libel.
Here is an excerpt from pages 105-107 of his 1944 book explaining each card:
Let’s emphasize that last bit because it shocked me that even the Great Beast himself would have figured out during World War II the link between Pan, the devil, and the blood libel against the Jewish people:
“Historically, the animus against witches pertains to the fear of the Jews; whose rites, supplanted by the Christian forms of Magic, had become mysterious and terrible. Panic suggested that Christian children were stolen, sacrifice, and eaten. The belief persists to this day.”
“The Israelis have been happy to murder tens of thousands of children in Gaza because they believe in blood guilt. That's just, that's just, a, that's the truth. They say it out loud. Amalek. We believe in blood guilt. Like the children are responsible for the sins of their parents, so we're going to kill them.”
At the funeral for the assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk: “And I can just sort of picture the scene in a lamp lit room with a bunch of guys sitting around eating hummus thinking about what do we do about this guy telling the truth about us. We must make him stop talking. And there’s always one guy with the bright idea. And I could just hear him say, ‘I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we just kill him? That’ll shut him up. That’ll fix the problem.’”
This is the face Tucker made after suggesting Jews had murdered his friend:
The man is demonically possessed. You can see it with your own eyes. You don’t need the etymology or esoterica to see it.
We just don’t want to consider the possibility since we’re all such sophisticated, modern, scientific people.
Anyone who would declare a blood libel against the Jews at his own friend’s funeral and then laugh about it in front of the world must be demonically possessed.
I rest my case.

What does Crowley mean by "Bliss"? If I'm understanding him correctly, he's using the term to refer to the sefira of Hokhma, but unless he's using the word in a very technical sense, I think his understanding of that sefira diverges significantly from the Jewish understanding.
I love a good ghost story but so far I've found nothing about that area ... except links to some of Carlson's own statements. I'll check in again if anything substantial turns up. As you say, Pan isn't confined to Greece, and it's entirely possible that nothing is haunting the woods up there - it's haunting *him.*
Anyway this would wholly explain how he went from being a reasonable and articulate commentator to ... whatever he's doing now. I thought it was odd how quickly he changed. Or perhaps he didn't change so much as this has brought out the worst in him.
