This is the fifth — and potentially final — installment of an ongoing series investigating Substack writers who choose to disable the Pangram AI scanning software in order to conceal their use of AI to aid in writing their articles. See the first three maximalist essay installments here:
And see The Wall of Shame here:
I didn’t plan on this.
Over a month has passed since my last piece in the Pangram investigations and I have not yet published the results of any of my three investigations. I audited both the new bestsellers and rising faith. I also assembled a list of 13 additional Substacks I had found disabling Pangram to conceal their AI-written text, plagiarized from the LLM of choice.
Many of those who blocked me in these investigations have already appeared now on the updated versions of The Wall of Shame. More will still need to be added from these lists unless they have now chosen to alter their ways and cease disabling Pangram. I’ll still publish these eventually.
The reason I’ve felt less drive to continue this series is because of this October 14 announcement revealing new settings added to Substack:
While Substack largely framed these updates around controlling one’s feed better — for example one can now mute posts using certain keywords, such as “Trump” or “AI” — they quietly buried the most exciting feature, my empahsis added:
The new dials—which you can find in the content preferences section of your settings—let you shape your feed the way you want it. See more or less video, audio, longform, or community features; mute specific keywords and phrases; fine-tune the topics you follow; and automatically label AI-generated material.
Substack kindly provided these instructions for how to set up your reading experience to automatically label 100% AI-written pieces and those where the author chooses to disable Pangram:
So now you don’t even need to bother with manually scanning it yourself when arriving at the page or copying and pasting manually into Pangram.
It’s just right there in the upper left corner saying “This Post is Bullshit, offered to you without shame from a Bullshit Salesman who thinks you’re a goddamn moron.”
Here are some examples of how the posts now show up, courtesty of some of the worst offenders from The Wall of Shame:
So, given these delightful updates which put the Pangram Policeman’s Badge directly in every reader’s hand, is there any point in continuing the Substack Plagiarism investigation?
You tell me, my dearest readers.
What would you like to see regarding further investigation into AI?
This topic will — like all others — most definitely take an even more massive turn to satire now following last week’s announcement of my career shift to a humor focus:
Are there AI-related topics I should cover?
Or would people really like to see the Pangram Police Chief’s investigation to continue further?
If people really want it then I’ll keep doing it… and make it even funnier than before…
But if there are other topics you’d rather see me write on instead, please make your voice known.
