“You mentioned as one of your disagreements with the conservative movement was in the area of trans rights. I am interested in you and Sally defining what you mean by “trans-rights” and what does it mean to be “anti-trans.” And what are conservatives doing to trans people that you oppose? That accusation is thrown out an awful lot, and I suspect you might have a more nuanced meaning.
Perhaps you could go into that more deeply in another podcast?”
I know this is an old podcast, but I agree with the sentiments here. I feel like this issue has become extremely prominent by design recently. I feel like the conversation has become extremely politicized to the point where it is extremely uncomfortable. Trans individuals are approximately 1.9% of the adult population and I feel like there is something wrong with targeting such a small group and essentially demonizing them. I don't see a trans person identifying as trans as an act that is hurting anyone, so I don't see the point in condemning it especially not in a secular society. To me it's an issue about human dignity and allowing people the ability to function as they are.
I think a lot of the reason why gay people are accepted so much more now is because of how many gay people came out and were open about their sexuality. More people started knowing gay people and through that knowing they saw that gay people were just people, they were not scary. I think its the same with trans people. I don't think many people actually know trans people and instead they form their opinions based on social media or media designed to depict trans people in a certain way.
I can't wait until this is no longer such a hot-button issue that is talked about ad-nauseum on places like Twitter and other social media.
As far as medical practices regarding transitioning, the last thing I want is the government overly involved in this. I would like this to remain something that is decided on through medical research and by the people involved not some politician(s).
America is a "Jerry Springerified" country that is a good take.
And the part about "extreme examples" being exploited and presented as the norm is definitely true.
