I have often wondered how languages with complicated grammars develop in the first place, given that the observed trajectory is for complexity to be smoothed away over time. Perhaps the problem of morality in public life is similar. Given that all the incentives are to erode the bounds of morality, how does strong moral fiber regain ground in a culture?

Moral fiber has never really had ground. It’s always been an illusion. Americans don’t want moral fiber. They want people to lie to them. Hence how both the Democrats and Republicans have operated our entire lives.
