Yes you’re right. He wanted the biggest groups of the day to circulate among other bands and keep exploring new musical frontiers. And even though his compositions had precise parts, he regarded soloing as an adventure where you took the chance of creating something new, possibly hitting the wrong note.
All new to me. I'll have to check him out! (I would also gladly be a captive audience if I could get flight lessons. :-) )
You can always learn to fly. I taught folks of all backgrounds and ages!
