One of the stars of the middle-aged generation of Israeli writers is Eshkol Nevo, five of whose novels have been translated into English. Nevo is also a founder and director of a creative writing school in Jaffa that consistently turns out new and noteworthy young authors.

My introduction to Nevo has been the novel Three Floors Up, which came out both in Hebrew and in English in 2015. I’ve eagerly set myself the task of reading the rest of his works. Three Floors Up is an addiction—best for reading at a time when you’re not doing too much else—that constantly entertains and surprises while plumbing its diverse characters’ depths with unfailing authenticity.
